In a gravity turn we are using part of the gravitational acceleration to speed up the ship instead of fighting purely against it. Okay, here is the deal with the gravity turn as I understand it.

Then you can burn prograde (which is the most efficient thing to do) while picking up transverse velocity in the process. Then you do the gravity turn you pitch the ship over so that gravity will take you on a parabolic arc. So you launch straight up this gets you through the thickest part of the atmosphere as soon as possible, and avoids nasty collisions with the ground. Unfortunately, not only do you not have the thrust for this (you wouldn't pick up enough speed before you hit the surface), there's also the slight problem of atmospheric drag. So ideally, you'd achieve orbit by starting with your rocket parallel to the surface, and apply a staggeringly vast amount of thrust from zero. If you want to achieve orbit, you need transverse velocity. You only gain speed only when you're burning prograde: work is only done when you apply a force parallel to your direction of motion. You perform a gravity turn in order to take advantage of physics. Gravity doesn't cause the ship to rotate. Will also delete on comment score of -1 or less. Interesting: Quantum gravity | Rocket | Gravity (Pixie Lott song) | 2+1-dimensional topological gravity This minimizes transverse aerodynamic stress on the launch vehicle, allowing for a lighter launch vehicle. Secondly, and more importantly, during the initial ascent phase the vehicle can maintain low or even zero angle of attack. Firstly, the thrust is not used to change the ship's direction, so more of it is used to accelerate the vehicle into orbit. It offers two main advantages over a trajectory controlled solely through vehicle's own thrust. It is a trajectory optimization that uses gravity to steer the vehicle onto its desired trajectory. Kind of like the care-taker role that does for some of his mods - no real addition to functionality or code changes, just turn the crank when a new KSP version comes out, and nothing more than a bug fix now and then. Please remain kind and civil at all times request Gaming Any chance you might be convinced to do a fork on github, and do a complete package build for 1.8.1 and/or 1.9.1 and throw that to CKAN, just as a stopgap "official" release for those of us without the pretty much said someone could take it over, even if its just to maintain via build only. So DeliriumTriggerwill be happy to know I no longer need this updated by the author. Generally don't like to do that as it splits from official code, but in case of abandoned mods, may be the only option.

Meanwhile I'll just update and recompile my own version. Probably just a matter of time till adopted by Linuxgurugamer. So I just looked at the source code on github and the last update was 2 years ago, so looks like no longer being updated.
